Dilara's Inspiring Journey Toward Becoming a Math Teacher in the UK

September 16th 2024

In an inspiring story of perseverance and ambition, Dilara, a 37-year-old mother of three (11,9,7) is on a transformative journey from her native Turkey to the classrooms of the UK, all while navigating the complexities of starting anew in a foreign land. Dilara's career in Turkey was marked by success; she worked as a dedicated math teacher and a thriving interior designer. However, a severe crisis in her home country forced her to make a life-altering decision. Dilara said “It happens, unfortunately, me and my husband lost our jobs and we suffered some tragedies. We moved to the UK because we know in the UK the human rights are very important. But in Turkey, we felt that the human rights were not protected.” To secure a better future for herself, she moved to the UK, leaving behind her job, her home, and her family. Three years ago, Dilara arrived in Rochdale. Although the transition was challenging, she was fuelled by determination and a vision for a brighter future. Despite initial struggles with English the proficiency and the uncertainties of a new educational system, Dilara remained steadfast in her goal of starting a new life of her own in Rochdale.

Her dedication led her to take significant steps toward achieving a job as a Maths teacher in the UK. She enrolled in a GCSE English course to enhance her language skills, and after passing with flying colours, she pursues further education. Dilara's hard work culminated in her acceptance into the PGCE teaching program at Bolton University, a critical milestone on her path to becoming a math teacher.
