FEMALE ENGINEER SETS THE STANDARD

Renold Gears based in Milnrow is celebrating the success of a diverse workforce through Apprenticeships. The team innovates in delivering the highest precision-engineered power transmission products to all industries worldwide. Their market-leading products can be seen in diverse applications from cement making to chocolate manufacturing, subway trains to power stations, escalators to quarries; in fact, anywhere something needs to be lifted, moved, rotated, or conveyed.

New Apprentice, Elspeth is currently completing a Level 2 Engineering Operative Apprenticeship following a structured learning programme to learn the skills, knowledge, and behaviours that she needs to be a successful Engineer. After completing her Level 2 qualification Elspeth will be moving on to her Level 3 before hoping to complete her HNC/HND qualification.

Elspeth said “I enjoy my Apprenticeship as it’s a hands-on learning environment with a focus on practical skills I need to succeed in the engineering industry. An Apprenticeship works for me, as I get paid to learn and spend my time between Rochdale Training and Renold Gears”.

Throughout Year 11 Elspeth stayed in contact with us and we knew she would make a great addition to any company that she went out to interview for. ENGINEERING EMPLOYER ENCOURAGES YOUNG TALENT TO CONSIDER APPRENTICESHIPS FOR A GOOD FUTURE

Bradley Manufacturing produces springs, wire forms, and pressed components - specialising in sheet metal fabrication and finishing services, including CNC manufacturing, laser cutting, punching, bending and forming, automated powder coating, and sublimation printing.  

The third-generation family company also has product testing and electrical assembly capabilities and has recently branched out into making LED light fittings. 

The firm’s 146,000sq. ft state-of-the-art factory in Chadderton, Oldham is home to several engineering apprentices who are currently learning about the business. The trainees are in different teams and over 12-36 months complete an engineering apprenticeship at level 3 with Rochdale Training.  

Tony Holden, apprentice mentor, and Spring supervisor said “I started as an apprentice many years ago with Rochdale Training and I now look after the new trainees. After completing my apprenticeship, I then moved into a full-time skilled role as a flat spring maker. From here I worked my way up within the company. Our business needs young talent to ensure our survival in the future. Trainees gain hands-on experience while getting paid and full training. Once qualified you can earn up to and above £30,000. 

Apprentices are supported through an internal development programme learning new skills from day one. Opportunities to develop and progress are encouraged with full support from the team to move into supervisory and management roles.  

Trainees are treated as adults from the day they walk through the door, and given extra responsibility and pay increases, they gain skills in the workplace and promotions during the apprenticeship. I would thoroughly recommend an apprenticeship to any young person; we are currently recruiting and welcoming applications from those who want to learn and have a good future career in engineering”.

Brew Monday

Today here at Rochdale Training, we turned 'Blue Monday' into 'Brew Monday'!

The third Monday in January is sometimes referred to as ‘the most difficult day of the year’ but this is a myth. We all have our good days and our bad days, and those aren’t for the calendar to decide.

So we say it's time to stop this myth about Monday being 'blue' and instead start a conversation over a brew! ​Reach out and connect with family, friends, colleagues and loved ones.

We can always make time for a cuppa and a catch-up. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Monday morning or Saturday night, or if you’re drinking green tea, black coffee or orange juice. If you’re sharing a cuppa and listening, you’re doing it right.

We had our Breakout Area set up with a Tea, Coffee and Biscuits station so all staff members and learners had a space to come and talk to each other with a brew. The importance of today was to reach out and listen to one another as we make it through what is considered to be the toughest day of the year. The Engineering Bridge Challenge

Last week our Engineers were put to the test, in a challenge to build a bridge that could hold a metal weight. They had to work together in teams and demonstrate communication, teamwork, problem solving and engineering skills! They were also given a spending limit for their materials so they had many challenges to work around. All bridges managed to hold the weight but the winning team had the bridge that when extra weight was added was the last one standing. Well done everyone!

 

The Sanctuary Trust Collection

Just before Christmas Rochdale Training closed its collection for The Sanctuary Trust and dropped off all items that were kindly donated by members of staff! Steve Kovaks Retirement Party

In December we held a retirement party for one of our Engineering Team members Steve Kovaks. Steve taught over 250 learners who are now in successful engineering roles around the globe. His manager Rachel gave a lovely speech and it was followed by a wonderful farewell from Steve, from everyone here at Rochdale Training we wish Steve all the best and a long, happy retirement!

Wear Your Woollies at Rochdale Training's Winter Wonderland

Our Apprentice Academy Learners held an amazing Winter Wonderland event in the breakout this morning for their closing group project! The learners demonstrated amazing communication, organisation and cooperation skills throughout the morning, ensuring all members of staff and learners had a great time. Along with the Winter Wonderland, we had Wear Your Woollies day here at Rochdale Training to raise money for Springhill Hospice. All the money from the different stalls and donations from staff will be donated to Springhill Hospice, in total we raised an amazing £134!

Rochdale Diversity Awards - Winners!

Rochdale Training has received the award for Diversity in Apprenticeships 2022!

The Diversity Awards recognise contributions made by individuals, groups and/or organisations in making progress within their organisations and/or communities towards inclusion, cohesion and diversity within the workplace and/or service provision.

Jill Nagy, Chief Executive of Rochdale Training said “We are very proud to receive this Award. Rochdale Training works hard to meet the needs of our community, embracing our diverse range of learners. We are the Home of Apprenticeships for everyone.”

White Ribbon Day - 25th November

White Ribbon Day happens every November as part of the UN’s annual 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign. Run by the White Ribbon UK charity, the global movement works to end men’s violence against women by raising awareness against the issue, educating boys and men as well as encouraging people to come together to put an end to it.

This morning Rochdale Training held a coffee morning to highlight the campaign and asked male staff, students, and tutors to agree to the White Ribbon promise to end violence towards women and girls.

Make your own Moustache!

Today we had a 'Create Your Own Moustache' craft event for all learners and staff to participate in! Rochdale Training is proud to be supporting MOVEMBER this year and we are encouraging our staff to grow a "tache" and show their support for men's health and in particular Prostate Cancer.
